Orgasm Revolution
Written by Dr. Sara Wood
Glamour magazine is not on my frequently read lists as I am pretty far from a fashionista and I can’t even name all of the Kardashians, but while poking around on the internet recently I read a headline that caught my eye. “I’m 32 and Married – and I’ve Never Had an Orgasm”. As you may guess, the story details one woman’s life long quest for an orgasm, including the frustration from several of her partners, and the shock when she shared this fact with friends.
There were several things about this story that struck me.
When she describes revealing her inability to reach an orgasm to even her best of friends, she is clearly embarrassed, asks not to be judged and is met with disbelief. Of course, the story is written anonymously, when it’s difficult to tell your closest girl friends something, you don’t exactly want to publish it for all the world, your grandmother and nosey neighbor to read.
While I don’t blame her for remaining anonymous, I can’t help but feel sad that we live in a world where women don’t feel comfortable talking about sex enough to confide in their friends, let alone talk to their doctors. This leaves women feeling isolated and alone with little knowledge of how common these struggles are.
Approximately 10% of women report never, (that’s right NEVER) having an orgasm.
Second, the article describes how she has made peace with this unfortunate betrayal of her body, citing that she enjoys sex with her husband and focuses on all the other pleasurable aspects of sex, of which I won’t argue that there are many. She discusses how she has tried many remedies, including toys, increased foreplay etc, but never mentions the possibility of any medical interventions. From hormone therapy to PRP injections like the vaginal PRP, there are a number of treatments available that can enhance orgasms in frequency and intensity, although you don’t typically find the information about this on a billboard.
We can all help with this problem by talking about it, so kudos for Glamour for at least starting the conversation, let’s all continue it! Sex is a very normal part of the human experience. Don’t be afraid to talk about sex, to have sex, to want more. We deserve it. Let’s start the new year with a very important resolution, more orgasms for everyone! Just think what a happy world we can create.
